Putting learning into practice – On how communicating well builds connection
Mary Puentespina
Strategy 2: Listening to Yourself
Day 3: Being Interested, Not Interesting
I was in Strategy 3 of the “7 Strategies for Career Success” when I had lunch with a friend. We were halfway through lunch when I suddenly felt unwell. I got distracted, I couldn’t focus on the conversation and everything became about me and my health.
My friend helped me get a glass of warm water and offered support and eventually the pain subsided.
Once I felt better, the learnings from strategies 2 and 3 of the course popped into my mind and I remembered cutting my friend off mid conversation. I paused and turned to look at her, asking specifically about the story she had been telling me. Her eyes sparkled. She was happy I remembered and cared enough to pick up from where we left off. Turns out she had lots more to say about the topic.
I can’t help but smile as I reflect on that situation. Learning and putting the techniques (“listening to yourself” and “being interested not interesting”) into practice really made an impact in my conversation. It also made me realise that communicating well builds connection. I know I will use this learning in my personal and professional life.
